Who is the Chosen? Who is Isreal?
Before we touch on the titled question, let's answer another question thats a sub-question to the titled questions: What is a Jew?
Honestly, I always thought a Jew was someone who practices Judaism. Some say a Jew is someone from Jerusalem, and others say somone from the nation of Isreal. Very few actually know that a true "Jew" is simply the descendant of Judah. Judah (son of Isreal) is the first "Jew".
The first time we see the word "Jew" in the KJV of the Bible is in 2 Kings 16:6 and the context that "Jew" is used is meaning the people in the geographical area of Judea. More than the tribe of Judah stayed in that land; you had the tribe of Benjamin, some Levites, and some northern tribes. So, "jew" really came fom a geographical stand point and is completely ineffectively used.
Todd D. Bennet (author of 'walk in the light' series) says, "The English translation of Esther is filled with the term 'Jew' because the tribes that were exiled to Babylon were from the house of Yahudah (Judah) or the kingdom of Yahudah, which was located in Judea. Therefore, these exiles were reffered to as Yahudim, which developed into the word Jews."
So, in conclusion, the term "jew" is incorrectly given to the religion of Judaism, thus making people who want to draw closer to YHWH believe that the only way they can be "chosen" is to be a member of that religious sect.
Since we now got a little bit of an understanding of what a "jew" is, lets find out what a "gentile" is. We are brought up thinking that a 'gentile' is simply someone whos not jewish. A 'gentile' is a heathen; a nation or individual or nation who refuses to follow YHWH. When you read about the "gentile nations" they're reffering to the Pagan nations the serve many gods and not the one true Elohim YHWH. Once we accept what Yeshua did for us on Calvary and accept him as our saviour, we then become a part of the "house of Isreal".
There are many questions that can help find the answer to the titled question, but those two were the key and most significant. Without the knowledge and wisdom of YHWH we may not understand the significance to any of this. Alot of us believers are brought up believeing certain things that hinder us from "worshipping in spirit and in truth". We don't think these things are important because we don't think they apply to us. And, truthfully, they don't... unless, of course, you want to follow wholeheartedly.
If we believe that YHWH is the same yesterday, today, and forever, then it is reasonable to say he is the same YHWH in the 'new testament' that he was in the Torah. "Well he gave us a new covenant!" No he did not! He RENEWED our old one. I know I'm hitting some 'touchy subjects', but it's my duty as a fellow brother in faith to preach and spread truth: YHWH's truth. So let me try to break this down in a way even a "babe in Christ" can understand.
There are a few key points we have to know. First, we need to know who YHWH delievered out of Egypt. The most common answer to that questions is, "the 'jews'". Some might say the Hebrews. Something that is frequently over looked is the fact that, THERE WAS A MIXED MULTITUDE with the hebrews, and in Leviticus 19:33-34 YHWH tells 'his people' to accept them and to treat them "as one born among you." (meditate on Isaiah 56:3-8 as well).
YHWH, all throughout the Torah (the old testament), makes it clear that HE WANTS EVERYONE to be a part of his family. Even in the "new testament", he makes that evident through his son. Rather you're part of Isreal or not is simply a matter of the heart; not genetics. Thats why you hear, in the book of Romans, that we are grafted into the "family" of YHWH (Romans 9:22-26, 9:1-15).
The point i'm trying to make is that, if we want to follow YHWH and be fellow heirs to his kingdom and promises, we must follow everything he has commanded. "Gentiles" have no part in the kingdom. Once you become "saved" and accept Yeshua as the son of YHWH, and believe in your heart that he came down here to die for your sins, then you are no longer "gentile", but you are now born again into the family of YHWH better known as "The House of Isreal"!
